• Day 1 Kathmandu to Syabrubesi, 137km, Approx. 7 hrs

     

    Today we will pick you up from the hotel in Kathmandu. So, you don’t need to worry about how to get to the Nepal border. What you need to do is to enjoy the astonishing landscape along the world-known Friendship Highway. It will be a long time driving due to road conditions. You are suggested to bring some snacks.

     

    Stay overnight in Syabrubesi, guesthouse

     

     

    Day 2 Syabrubesi to Gyirong, 40km, Approx. 4-5hrs

     

    Attractions: Paba Temple 

     

    Firstly, we will drive you to the Nepal border from Syabrubesi, which takes around 3 hours to finish a 15 km distance. After entering Tibet, your Tibet tour guide will greet you with white Hada, a holy scarf with a meaning of blessing. Then, you will head to Gyirong town (2,800 meters), where is in a remote area but with a great view. You could pay a visit to Paba Temple (2,850 meters) in the afternoon. It’s a typical Gelugpa Monastery built by the great King of Tibet --- Songtsan Gambo. However, you could see many Nepalese elements in the delicate murals.

    Day 3 Gyirong to EBC to Tingri, 480km, Approx. 11 hrs

     

    Attractions: Peikutso Lake, Everest Base Camp, Rongbuk Monastery

     

    Today will be a long-time driving. In the morning, we will head for Everest Base Camp after breakfast. On the way, you will pass by the Peikutso Lake and endless grasslands. When you arrive at Everest, the highest peak in the world, you will also see the first monastery on earth --- Rongbuk Monastery. After that, we will start driving to Tingri. We will not arrange to stay overnight at Everest due to the acclimatization issue.

    Day 4 Tingri to Shigatse, 280km, Approx. 7 hrs

     

    Attractions: 5000 Meters’ Milestone of G318 National Highway, Tashilhunpo Monastery

     

    You will go to Shigatse today, which is the second largest city in Tibet Autonomous Region. From Tingri to Lhatse, you could see the 5000 Meters’ Milestone of G318 National Highway.  

    In the noon, you will arrive in Shigatse. After lunch, we will arrange for you to visit Tashilhunpo Monastery. It’s famous as the home of Panchen Lama and the largest Buddhism school in Shigatse.

    Day 5 Shigatse to Lhasa via Gyantse, 375km

     

    Attractions: Pelkor Monastery and Gyantse Kumbum, Karola Glacier, Yamdroktso Lake

     

    Today you will go to Lhasa from Shigatse via Gyantse. It’s 375km from Shigatse to Lhasa. With the speed-limit regulation, it usually takes 7-8 hours on the way. But no worries. Please get your camera ready, there are really good sights worth shooting.

     

    After arriving in Gyantse, you will visit the mysterious Pelkor Monastery and Gyantse Kumbum (4040m). The most interesting collection in this monastery is the “One Hundred Thousand Buddhas Pagoda”. It has nine floors, 77 rooms, and 108 doors. The door frames in each room are very low and people have to bow to enter.

     

    Continue to drive, you will see the spectacular Karola Glacier (5045 meters) and turquoise colored Yamdroktso Lake (4400m), which is one of the three sacred lakes in Tibet. It is the largest freshwater lake in the northern Himalayas, stretching 675 square meters from south to north, like an earlobe lying in the arms of giant snow-capped mountains.

    Day 6 Lhasa Sightseeing

     

    Attractions: Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, Barkhor Street

     

    Start today’s Lhasa exploration with an exciting visit to the Potala Palace, which is the famous world heritage. It’s located on the Red Mountain. You will climb the palace along the zigzag stone paths with white-and-red walls. On top of the palace, you will not only enjoy the exotic Tibetan architecture but also enjoy the magnificent view of downtown Lhasa. Then, you will go into the interior of the Potala Palace to visit the gilded burial stupas of former Dalai Lamas and meditation Cave of the 33rd great king of Tibet. Besides, it is worth mentioning that in September every year, many devout Tibetans will paint the outer walls of the Potala Palace with milk and honey. So, the Potala Palace is considered as the sweetest palace in the world.

     

    After lunch, continuing your exploration, you will visit the Jokhang Temple, which is considered as the spiritual center of Tibetan Buddhism. It’s famous for a golden life-sized statue of 12-year-old Sakyamuni, which was taken there by Princess Wencheng in the Tang Dynasty. Every day, you will see many devout Tibetans do a Kora (pilgrimage) in front of Jokhang Temple. After that, you will wander around the famous Barkhor Street, which is a circular and wide street encircling the Jokhang Temple. You can drink sweet tea, buy some local souvenirs and chat with local Tibet people here.

     

    Tips of Today: As there are 1,080 steps up to the top of Potala Palace, so it’s better not to walk in a rush. You can do abdominal respiration as much as possible when you are walking or climbing.

    Day 7 Lhasa Sightseeing

     

    Attractions: Drepung Monastery, Sera Monastery

     

    In the morning, you will visit Drepung Monastery, located at the foot of Mount Gephel. It’s well-known as one of the “Great Three” Gelugpa monasteries in Tibet. The other two monasteries are Ganden Monastery and Sera Monastery. In its heyday, there are more than 10,000 monks lived and studied in this monastery. Many famous Tibetan leaders have studied here, especially the Dalai Lama. Therefore, Drepung Monastery is also famous for “Mother School of Dalai Lamas”.

     

    In the afternoon, you will visit Sera Monastery. You can see three sand Mandalas and colorful Rock Painting of Buddha in the monastery. Besides, Sera Monastery is well-known as the "Buddhism Debating", which opens from 3 pm to 5 pm every day except for Sunday. You can participate in the daily debate of 80 monks in the enclosed courtyard. This is more like a question and an answer session. The standing monks ask questions to the sitting monks. Standing monks would clap their hands loudly, stomp on the ground heavily to knock and open the door to hell. The standing monks would wear prayer beads on the shoulder and when beads fall, they pick it up back to the shoulder symbolizing rescuing the suffering souls in hell from the 3 demons of anger, desire, and ignorance and hatred. After enjoying a wonderful Buddhist Debating in Sera Monastery, we will drive back to Lhasa city.
