    Day 2 Lhasa Sightseeing

Attractions: Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, Barkhor Street

Start today’s Lhasa exploration with an exciting visit to the Potala Palace, which is the famous world heritage. It’s located on the Red Mountain. You will climb the palace along the zigzag stone paths with white-and-red walls. On top of the palace, you will not only enjoy the exotic Tibetan architecture but also enjoy the magnificent view of downtown Lhasa. Then, you will go into the interior of the Potala Palace to visit the gilded burial stupas of former Dalai Lamas and meditation Cave of the 33rd great king of Tibet. Besides, it is worth mentioning that in September every year, many devout Tibetans will paint the outer walls of the Potala Palace with milk and honey. So, the Potala Palace is considered as the sweetest palace in the world.

After lunch, continuing your exploration, you will visit the Jokhang Temple, which is considered as the spiritual center of Tibetan Buddhism. It’s famous for a golden life-sized statue of 12-year-old Sakyamuni, which was taken there by Princess Wencheng in the Tang Dynasty. Every day, you will see many devout Tibetans do a Kora (pilgrimage) in front of Jokhang Temple. After that, you will wander around the famous Barkhor Street, which is a circular and wide street encircling the Jokhang Temple. You can drink sweet tea, buy some local souvenirs and chat with local Tibet people here.

Tips of Today: As there are 1,080 steps up to the top of Potala Palace, so it’s better not to walk in a rush. You can do abdominal respiration as much as possible when you are walking or climbing.

Standing monks would clap their hands loudly, stomp on the ground heavily to knock and open the door to hell. The standing monks would wear prayer beads on the shoulder and when beads fall, they pick it up back to the shoulder symbolizing rescuing the suffering souls in hell from the 3 demons of anger, desire, and ignorance and hatred.
